We’re back and we’re ready to share with you an awesome new oil!
Pelargonium Graveolens, or geranium is known as Attr in Egypt which means “distilled”. It’s so commonly used in Egypt that the word for distilled oil is its name. This oil has been used for thousands of years since Ancient Egyptian times for skin care, it’s safe, beautiful and now it can be yours direct from Egypt.
We sent a sample to one of our favorite NCS community members and a wonderful nose and perfumer, Riccardo, and this is what he had to say:
“It’s wonderful, very close to Zdravets, similar odor profile but greener, it also has some sort of verbena or litsea aspects to it. For some reason it makes me think of the twigs of geranium more than flowers, and definitely leaves, it’s got a complex floral green core. After a couple of min on my skin in this wonderful NY heat I’m staring to smell the geraniol and/ other usual damascone, damascenone notes, but they are subdued at first.
It’s like a lemon pound cake with geranium flowers! Maybe there are some coumarin notes in between that don’t get to be vanilla, giving the “cake” or creamy aspect.”
This year during Ramadan I took a bus from Cairo, Egypt down to Beni Suef where I met Ahmed, a local member of a family which has been distilling Geranium for 3 generations. They started with woodfire stoves, and now have stainless tanks. I was so happy to meet some of the workers in the factory with speaking disabilities and to see how kindly Ahmed took care of them. We went for a walk around the grounds, checking in with the famers, rubbing the leaves and smelling the various aromatic plants they grow. He also showed me three generations of distilling equipment.
